Vaikathappan the Lord of Lord is granting of Darsana with His consort Matha Parvathy-Jagath Janani-to all Devotees. There is no successful finding of any historical evidence about the origin of Vycome temple. With some legends and folklores, the origin of the Siva Chaithanya and temple dates backs to ‘Threta Yuga”which are exchanged from generation to generation
An Asura named Khara got Shaiva Vidya Upadesh from Asura Hermit Malyavan.Asura went to Chithambaram to serve penance and Thapasya for Moksha. Pleased with his penance Nataraja , the Sabhavathi who is worshipped with fear and devotion by Vishnu, Brahma and all Gods and Maharshis-Sanaka and Narada-appeared to Khara and granted all the boons he asked. They gave three grate Siva Lingas to him. Lord Siva assured Khara to worship the three Lingas to attain Moksha. Khra carried all the three Lingas held one in right hand ,one in left hand and other in neck. Maharshi Vyaghrapada followed Khara invisibly .On the way he take some rest and descended on earth .After some time Khara wanted to continue his journey. To his astonishment Khara found that all Lingas were fixed firmly on earth . Khara was a real devotee of Lord Siva .He knew that this miracle was a’Maya” of Lord Siva and praised the Lord deeply. Suddenly Khara heard a voice “I shall remain here giving Moksha to whom take refuge in Me. When Khara opened his eyes ,he saw great Maharshi Vyagrapada is near to the holy Lingas. Khara entrusted the three holy Linhas to the custody of Maharshi Vyagrapada .Khara asked the sage to adore and protect the Lingas
Khara was carried away to Kailas by Siva Kinkaras and was attained Siva Sayujya. The Siva Linga placed in right hand of Khara ,is being worshipped at VAIKOM .The other Linga in his left hand is at ETTUMANOOR,and the third one with his neck is placed at KADUTHURUTHY (early known as Kadalthuruth). The distance from Vaikom to Kaduthuruthy and from there to Ettumanoor are equal. This gives believes to this legend and the Darsana of all the three Lingas on a same day is considered as good as the Siva Darsana at Kailas . Maharshi Vyaghrapada worshipped the Siva Linga here and performed poojas with great devotion and Bhakthi after the Khara Asura’s departure.
Sree Parameswara appeared to the Vyakrapada Maharshi with his consort Parvathi Devi-the Jagath Janani-on Vrichika month (Malayalam Eara) of Krishna paksha,Ashtami day and proclaimed “This place shall be known as VYAGHRAPADAPURAM”and disappered . Maharshi continued the Poojas in most esteem and devotion ,here even to this day is celebrated the holy world famous VAIKKATHASHTAMI.
