A saintly life should be followed during this period.So the devotees set for the pilgrimage must keep off women ,liquors and non-veg; food and follow the path of ahimsa.To redeem the world Lord Ayyappa decided to be a celibity and Satwik Brahma.All Ayyappan should be bare-footed to sabarimala and should live in tune with nature like a yogi. After wearing the beaded chain devotees should not trim his hair,beard,mustache or nails.This is to awaken the spiritual senses and also to make the devotees mind and body go back to nature after leading a year of luxurious life.

Sree Dharmasastha Temple at Sabarimala short history

Sree Dharmasastha Temple at Sabarimala is situated within the
Reserve Forest area in Perinad village at Ranni Taluk in
Pathanamthitta District in Kerala.The temple is located in a valley surrounded by dense Forest Hills on all sides.

Sabarimala  is situated in the midst of 18 hills, in a bowl of land blessed with a small rivulet named `Urakuzhi Theertham'. The area is in the hilly regions east of Kerala bordering Tamilnadu. Elevation above mean sea level is approximately 1262 Metres. Temples existed in each of the hills surrounding Sabarimala. While functional (and intact temples) exist at many places in surrounding areas like Nilackal, Kalaketi, Inchiparakotta and Karimala, remnants of old temples are visible in the remaining hills.

ശ്രീ പരശുരാമന്‍ കേരള സൃഷ്ട്ടിക്കു ശേഷം ശ്രീ അയ്യപ്പ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയെന്നാണ് ഐതീഹ്യം. ഭാരതത്തിലെ പ്രമുഖ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ് ശബരിമല ശ്രീധര്‍മ്മ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം.കഠിന വ്രതാനുഷ്ടാനങ്ങളും ക്ലേശകരമായ മലകയറ്റവും ക്ഷേത്രസന്നിധിയിലെ ദേവതാ സങ്കല്‍പ്പവും, ഭക്തനും ഒന്നാകുന്നു എന്നത് ശബരിമലയുടെ മാത്രം പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്.ശബരിമല ദര്‍ശനം ഒരു മണ്ഡലകാല വ്രതമെടുത്താണ് അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നത്.ശരീരം,ചിന്ത,വാക്ക് എന്നിവയില്‍ അധിഷ്ഠിതമാണ് മണ്ഡലകാല വൃതം. സ്നാനം,ആഹാരം എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ശരീരശുദ്ധി. ജപം,ധ്യാനം,ക്ഷേത്രദര്‍ശനം എന്നിവയിലൂടെ മനശുദ്ധി. നിദ്ര,ആഹാരം എന്നിവ നിയന്ത്രിച്ച് ഇന്ദ്രിയനിയന്ത്രണവും ശീലമാക്കുക.
മണ്ഡലകാലം
ഒരു മണ്ഡലകാലം 41 ദിവസമാണ്. സൂര്യന്‍ ഒരു രാശിയില്‍ നിന്ന് അടുത്ത രാശിയിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്ന ദിവസം വരേയും ഒരു സൗരമാസമാണ്. 27 നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളില്‍ ഒരു ചന്ദ്രമാസകാലമായിട്ടാണ് ആചരിച്ചുവരുന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രപക്ഷത്തെ ആശ്രയിച്ച് പിത്രുകര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍ അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നു.പിതൃക്കള്‍ക്ക് 12  ദിവസം ഒരു ദേവദിവസവും, ഒരു ദിവസത്തിന്റെ ¹/₈ ഭാഗം, 7 ¹ /₂ നാഴികയാണ്, ബ്രാഹ്മമുഹൂര്‍ത്തമായി കണക്കാക്കി (324x7 ¹/₂ =2430 /60 = 40  ¹/₂ )ഇതില്‍ അര ദിവസം കൂട്ടി 41 ദിവസം ഇ കാലയളവ്‌ മനുഷ്യശരീരത്തിലെ ഒരു കോശം പൂര്‍ണവളര്‍ച്ച എത്താന്‍ എടുക്കുന്നു.ഗ്രഹസ്ഥാശ്രമി മാലയിട്ടു ഇരുമുടികെട്ടുമേന്തി പമ്പയില്‍ പിതൃതര്‍പ്പണം ചെയ്ത് പിത്രുകടം വീട്ടി കാനനത്തിലൂടെ ക്ലേശങ്ങള്‍ സഹിച്ച് അയ്യപ്പനെ ദര്‍ശിക്കുന്നു. ഇരുമുടികെട്ട് പുന്ന്യപാപചുമടും തേങ്ങ ശരീരവും നെയ്യ് ആത്മാവ്വുമാകുന്നു.നെയ്യ് ഭഗവാന് അഭിഷേകവും ഉടഞ്ഞ തേങ്ങ ആഴിയില്‍ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ആത്മാവ് അയ്യപ്പനില്‍ വലയം പ്രാപിച്ച് ശരീരം തീയില്‍ ലയിച്ച് മോക്ഷപ്രപ്തിയില്‍ എത്തുന്നു.ഋഷികടം ദേവകടം പിത്രുകടം എന്ന് 3 ജീവകടം ശബരിമല യാത്രയില്‍ ഒന്നിച്ച വീട്ടാം.
