Udayanapuram Temple
Udayanapuram enshrining Subramanya is located near Vaikom and is closely associated with the Vaikom Mahadevar temple and the Kumaranallur Bhagawati temple. It is believed that worship at the famed Vaikom Mahadevar temple is complete only after a visit to Udayanapuram. Udayanapuram is also closely tied to the grand Ashtami celebration at the Vaikom temple.
Udayanapuram is considered to be equivalent to Palani in Tamilnadu.
Legend has it that the Bhagawati temple at Kumaranallur nearby was originally intended for Subramanya and that this temple was intended originally for Bhagawati and was known as Udayanayakeepuram. It is believed that Bhagawati occupied the temple intended for Kumaran, and hence her temple town took on the name Kumaran-alla-ooru (not for Kumaran). In conjunction with this legend, Bhagawati Sevai is conducted at the Subramanya temple at Udayanapuram.
In terms of structure, it does resemble the Vaikom Mahadevar temple. The temple boasts of several beautiful carvings and paintings.
Thai Poosam in the month of Capricorn, is celebrated in great splendour here, when hundreds of Kaavadis line up here in procession. These Kaavadis make their way to Vaikom first and then find their way to Udayanapuram.
The most interesting of festivals here is the Vaikkattu Ashtami, the 12th day of the annual festival in the month of Scorpio. This day witnesses a spectacular victory procession of Subramanya from Udayanapuram to Vaikom, symbolizing Kartikeya's victory over the demons, and his greeting Shiva at Vaikom on the occasion. Also accompanying this procession are deities from several other neighboring temples.
This three hour long procession with the accompaniment of music and elephants reaches the Vaikom temple, where an image of Shiva on a beautifully decorated elephant greets the procession. This meeting is followed by a farewell, and Subramanya is taken back in procession to Udayanapuram.
Interestingly, no food offerings are made at the Vaikom temple sanctum during this festival, as it is believed that Shiva himself fasts, for his son's success in the battle against the demons, while thousands are fed within the temple precincts.
The Kidangoor Skanda temple: At Kidangoor in this area, there is a Subramanya temple. Legend has it that this temple was originally constructed for Vishnu, but a sequence of events involving local legends caused this to be consecrated as a Subramanya temple (in a manner similar to the Kumaranalloor temple). The annual festival at Kidangoor is celebrated in the month of Kumbham. Kartikai and Thai Poosam are the other festivals celebrated here.
The Thottagam Skanda temple: Located in Thalayazham near Vaikom, this Subramanya temple celebrates its annual utsavam for 8 days from Chathayam to Rohini in Dhanur month.

Attukal gears up to welcome Sabarimala pilgrims
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If everything goes as per the district authorities' plan, Ayyappa devotees will have a hassle-free time at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple this season. Both the district administration and the temple trust are giving final touches to the special arrangements at for the Sabarimala pilgrims arriving at the temple.
It was last year that the district authorities decided to set up a halting point (idathavalam) at Attukal with the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple turning a must-visit pilgrimage centre and a large number of Sabarimala pilgrims flocking to the city.
Devaswom and health minister V S Sivakumar inaugurated the 24X7 police control room and KSRTC service on Friday evening. The neatly asphalted two-and-a-half acre parking bay that can accommodate up to 150 buses at a time, will be ready by Monday.
"Apart from that, the health department will provide a mobile clinic at the temple for the devotees and steps will be initiated towards controlling epidemic diseases. Suchitwa Mission, Thiruvananthapuram corporation and health department will ensure cleanliness on the premises and a team of 200 policemen will manage the security, traffic and smooth flow of devotees. We hope the devotees will have hassle-free time at Attukal," said Thiruvananthapuram revenue divisional officer Mohammed Mustafa.
Apart from these, the temple authorities are arranging showers, water taps, free food, open kitchen, shelter and bed space for the pilgrims.
"We are spending Rs 20 lakh to asphalt the parking bay and Rs 50 lakh to construct permanent refreshment complex for this season which will be ready in a few days. We also constructed a building for an Indian Coffee House outlet and a shopping complex at a cost of Rs 20 lakh and Rs 18 lakh, respectively," said Attukal Bhagavathy Temple Trust secretary M S Jyothishkumar.
District authorities said KSRTC services have already started connecting Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and Attukal Temple. "This would help ease traffic congestion in city due to Ayyappa devotees' vehicles. Services made available at Attukal and Sree Padmanabhaswamy temples will be exhibited and announced in five languages at Attukal. A meeting of hoteliers, roadside tea-food stalls and vendors is convened on Saturday to reach a consensus on the rates of food items to be distributed," said the RDO.

Tirupati has answer to Sabari woes

With the season for Sabarimala pilgrimage approaching, about 50 million devotees from all over India are set to descend on the hill shrine. The number of pilgrims is increasing year after year and the pressure on the Periyar Tiger Reserve where the shrine is located, is beyond its threshold limit now.
Restricting the number of devotees visiting the shrine would be conflicting with the faith of millions and what calls for is the effective management of the numbers, keeping the conservation of the tiger reserve and the forest in mind.
Currently, devotees stand in serpentine queues for up to 24 hours to get the Lord's darshan during rush hours. Such a long wait adds to a multifold crowd density at Sannidhanam. So what would be an ideal situation at Sabarimala? How could the crowd be better managed to allow a smooth flow for darshan this time and also in future?
Then the devotees come again and again over the flyover for repeated darshans, thereby increasing the crowd density.
Further, they break and transfer the abhishekam ghee, stand in a queue again to get the same ghee back as prasadam.
Since they get repeated darshans, many stay for two days or more. On festive occasions, this goes up. For effective crowd management, environmental research scientist Prof S. Sitaraman has now come up with a proposal, in which a new system for Sabarimala darshan, similar to Guruvayur and Tirupati temples with onetime darshan with other supporting measures, is suggested. According to this plan, the basic hubs for Sabarimala darshan have to be Pampa and Nilakkal (currently utilized mainly as parking areas).
“Devotees after crossing Pampa should proceed as in a one way to reach Marakkoottam and Saramkuthi and Nadapanthal. From Nadapanthal the devotees with their irumudi will have to proceed in a queue to the Pathinettampadi/Sannidhanam.
And from this point devotees will take a straight/right turn to the sanctum sanctorum and have darshan of Lord Ayyappa. (Similar to the system in Tirupati /Guruvayur)“, says Prof Sitaraman.
According to the plan, further to darshan and kanikka, the devotees proceed left to have darshan of Lord Kannimoola Ganapathy. From here they need to go left to reach an open terrace (to be built) having sufficient space. Here the devotees will take out the mudra and other offering from their irumudi.
“On one side of the terrace, temple authorities are to provide sufficient number of counters with experts, who shall break the mudra, hand over the ghee and receipts for offerings/prasdams like appam, aravana etc. One half of the coconut would be handed over to the devotee and other half will be conveyed to the holy Ganapathy Kundam Agni through automated means like conveyors“, says Prof Sitaraman.
The devotee/guruswamy along with others can now proceed to the stainless steel tank (to be provided) at the other end of the terrace and pour the ghee for abhishekam with all devotion. The ghee tank to be maintained with utmost care should have controlled heating arrangements so that ghee can be pumped to the storage near Sreekovil.
“The priests in the Sreekovil should conduct abhishekams continuously and after this the ghee would flow through a pipeline to the prasadam delivery counters in the exit route. The merchandise of aravana/appam also could be organised here. Devotees after darshan of satellite temples like Malikappuram etc can proceed back to Pampa after collecting prasadam, ghee, etc. On no count will a devotee on his way back enter the forward path to Sannidhanam“, says Prof Sitaraman.
He suggested that on peak days like Makaravilakku, only preregistered devotees should be allowed. This can be done by online registration and computers shall select a predetermined number taking into account the converging capacity at Sannidhanam.
Each of them shall carry the permit so issued. The entry of pilgrims through Pullumedu, in the Vandiperiyar route and other pocket road entries are to be closed. This system will keep the area serene and less contaminated /polluted and there will be lesser pressure on sanitation as well.
